Message from the president about elections.
I know that the recent news that non-students could no longer vote caused quite a bit of upset, and as I've already said I'm going to be working with the Students' Union Council to try and improve matters for next year. However, we can't enact any changes before our AGM, so after much reading of various constitutions I've come up with a bit of a workaround (and, importantly, had it okayed by the Students' Union to keep us out of trouble!). If you're curious, and would like to have your voice heard at the AGM, please read on. It can get a bit wordy, but bear with us. The committee consists of two parts - the Executive and Ordinary members. The SU constitution mandates that every society has a three-person Executive, and they must be students - if we can't get three students together to run Slayers, we really can't call ourselves a student society! Only students are permitted to run or vote for these positions, and voting must take place by secret ballot (slips of paper) The same voting restrictions and method apply to the Ordinary Commitee, but non-students can nominate themselves for the positions (without being able to vote for themselves). However, if any ordinary committee posts are left vacant after the AGM due to nobody putting themselves forward (or the voters rejecting all candidates) then the Executive Committee can co-opt somebody to fulfil the vacant role. The Executive can also, of course, choose to ask the advice of all members before choosing who to co-opt! What it boils down to is: if all the potential committee members feel that they would rather be chosen by the entire society instead of just the student membership, then they can refuse to nominate themselves during the AGM itself. Once it's over, the new exec can ask for anybody interested to put themselves forward, and then consult with the members via a show of hands. Co-opted members are not voting members of the committee, but as the committee never actually votes on anything then that doesn't make a huge difference.
I know we're barely a month into this term, but we have to hold an AGM to elect next year's committee before the end of March - and we have to give at least two weeks notice of said AGM, so here it is! Please note that if you have not yet paid your membership for the year, you cannot either stand for a position or vote in the committee elections. On the agenda will be brief(!) reports from committee members, some proposed amendments to the Constitution to bring it up to date, and of course the committee elections. The full list of available positions (as outlined in the Dragonslayers Constitution) are: Executive Committee (QUB students only)
- President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
Ordinary Committee (Open to all paid-up members)
- Senior Games Master (aka Tabletop Coordinator)
- Webmaster
- Members Representative
- Events Officer
- Publicity Officer
- Anime Coordinator
- Console Gaming Coordinator
We'll try and keep the meeting as brief as possible, but obviously electing ten different committee positions will take some time. We'd ask all members to attend if at all possible, and for the duration of the meeting we'll be putting all games on hold (it's only once a year!)
Read on for a full breakdown of the responsibilities of each committee member.
